Tornados Spotted near Stoney Corners Road; Houghton Lake

Sunday evening’s severe weather meant lots of rain, lightning and even tornadoes.

During the storms that hit our area on Sunday, a tornado was sighted near Stoney Corners Road in Missaukee County. The National Weather Service is Gaylord reports that the tornado was spotted near the intersection of Stoney Corners and Green Roads. Witnesses say the storm looked extremely strong, and may have caused damage to the area.

The National Weather Service also reported the spotting of a possible rain wrapped tornado along the north shore of Houghton Lake at 7:32pm; however, upon investigation a National Weather Service survey team concluded that the damage north of Houghton Lake was caused by straight line winds of between 60 and 65 mph. While the thunderstorm exhibited strong rotation, the service said that a tornado was never able to make contact with the ground.

The organization is still investigating the storms to find out exactly how much damage was caused, and how much of that damage was caused by tornadoes.
